Death came at 9:20 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 1937, to Mrs. Emma Skelton Gillis, 72, wife of John W. Gillis, retired business man of Danville. Mrs. Gillis died at her country home, Danville, Route 3, following a long illness.  Mrs. Gillis, resident of Danville and vicinity since she was a small child, and grand-daughter of a Mexican War veteran and pioneer Baptist minister, who baptized her when she was a small child. Christine "Emma" Skelton was born on November 28, 1866 in Montgomery, Indiana, she was a daughter of Mark and Lucy Van Cleave Skelton. Her grandfather, the Rev. Jonathan Van Cleave, Baptist minister, baptized her at the old Indian Creek Baptist Church, near Crawfordsville, Indiana. Her father was also a minister and succeeded the Rev. Van Cleave as pastor of the Indian Creek church, serving in that capacity for 35 years.  She was united in marriage to Mr. Gillis on June 20, 1888. To this union, two girls and a son were born.  During her long residence in Danville, Mrs. Gillis was active in the civic and social life of the city  and  continued this activity until her health failed.  Besides the husband, she is survived by a son, Earl Gillis of Danville, and two daughters, Miss Hazel Gillis of Indianapolis and Mrs. Lillian Henders of Long Beach, California. Four grandchildren also survive. Three sisters and five brothers preceded her in death.  The body was taken to Berhalter's Mortuary, where it will remain until after the funeral, plans for which were incomplete Saturday night.

Funeral services for Mrs. John W. Gillis, 73, who died at 9:20 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 1937, at her home on Danville, route 3, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1937 at Berhalter's Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. John M. Newsom, Th.D., pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial in Springhill Cemetery. A sister, Mrs. W. E. Tibbitts, Nora Springs, Iowa, has arrived here called by the death.

According to Bill Borror, Emma had a lot of very elegant parties with fine china, etc at their home over by Jackson St and Harrison. Close to Springhill Cemetery. Her grandfather, the Rev.
